Birdwatching hobbyists in Malawi

We are parents of kids (40+) who are working in the Health Field in Malawi.
We plan to visit them in March, 2008, and wish to meet interested birdwatchers who can tell us , and even join us, of the good birding spots in and around Lilongwe which will be our home base.
My husband is a dentist; I am a silver/gold smith.
We love to do nature photography, so insects would be fine, too!
Any helpful hints given will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Marilyn Koshland

Vwaza Marsh

I lived outside of Vwaza Marsh for two years and the birds there are incredible. There are a lot of water birds. This time of year has postives and negatives to it. There are a lot of birds but the vegetaion is thick. Vwaza is in the north and it is a small wildlife reserve. It is easy to get to via Mzuzu and then Rumphi with nice accomodations and people. I hope you get this before you leave and decide to visit my second home.

BIRDWATCHING IN MALAWI

Thank you to everyone who responded! I can't wait to visit.
Will coming in March, the end of the rainy season, be a detriment?
(The only time we can get away!) Any more input is sooooo appreciated. Thanks, Marilyn Koshland

We live in LLW and enjoy

We live in LLW and enjoy birdwatching - call us when you are here. We can also put you in touch with Ken Longdon who is a whizzo birdwatcher and goes off to little known places most w/es

Land and Lake Safaris and Central African Wilderness Safaris both run excellant birding trips (w/e and longer) to your own specifications and can be accessed I'm sure on their websites

I can't believe that we will be in Malawi in a few weeks!
We have made arrangements to go to Dzalanyama with Land & Lake the first week in March!
Can you put us in touch with Ken Longdon who maybe can suggest where we can go the 8th or 9th of March. We want to go to Nyika the next week and probably will go with Land & Lake, also.
Please contact Amy Gottlieb amy_gottlieb (X) hotmail.com with any info...
Thanks...and I hope we meet you soon!

Hi Marilyn, I have collected

Hi Marilyn,

I have collected some information about birding around Lilongwe. Check out these links:

Hope that helps. :-)

incredible

I don't have a lot of advice as I am not technically a bird watcher myself. However, one can not help but watch birds in this country. Fish eagles swooping down beside you, kingfishers in the garden at breakfast. It really is incredible and I'm sure if I had your knowledge I would be even more impressed.

There is a dam, Kamuzu dam, close to Lilongwe (45 min drive) and it is excellent to take out kayaks early morning and watch birds around the shore. There's also a hippo which you might get to photograph! If you sail its also a sailing club with a cottage you can stay in.

I know this isn't very substantial feedback but wanted to let you know you're on your way to bird watcher's paradise.

Safe travels getting here!
